Nose Piercing Risks

When it comes to a nose piercing or nostril piercing as it is sometimes referred to, there are several risks you should be aware of. For starters, there is the usual potential of risks of an allergic reaction to either the chemicals used to clean and sanitize the jewelry as well as the piercing location.

Furthermore, you could have an allergic reaction to the jewelry itself unless you make sure that it is stainless steel. Some jewelry can be made using small amounts of nickel which may cause an allergic reaction in some people and many people find out after a piercing that they are allergic to gold. The best choices is to simply choose a high quality stainless steel jewelry for the initial piercing and then experiment with other forms of jewelry later on after the healing process is complete.

It is also equally important to refrain from swimming during the healing time; this includes both fresh and salt water as well as swimming pools. While swimming pools may seem harmless and the fact that they are chlorinated and free of bacteria, does not mean that they are safe. Matter of fact it is the chlorine which can cause an issue though the drying out of the skin around the new piercing which can weaken it making it prone to being able for the piercing to be torn out. As far as both fresh water and salt water bodies of water, these are not safe for the fact that protozoa bacteria and parasites can be in them. These little critters just love fresh and open wounds to call their new home and as a result you can end up with a nasty little infection.

You may also develop some nasty scar tissue as a result of your nose piercing. This does not just include a standard scar, but also includes the potential of keloids which is a scar located deep beneath the layers of skin. These keloid scars can even occur in a spot that the initial piercing is not at. It is not uncommon to develop a kelodial lump several millimeters away from the initial piercing.

Furthermore, there is also the potential of severe pain as a result of the numerous nerve endings in the nose. This pain may be more apparent if you opt for a septum piercing and especially if the piercing goes through the cartilage rather than below it. As far as a bridge piercing, there is a heightened chance of excessive scarring as well as rejection of the piercing associated with the bride pierced nose.

Most of these risks can be avoided by simply making sure that the piercing technician you choose is qualified and experienced in nose piercing. Furthermore to prevent the contraction of a viral disease like hepatitis B or C as well as HIV, make sure that the piercing equipment is sanitized or better yet, disposable.

Sea salt water is used to clean piercings. It’s recommended for piercings and everybody knows it’s good for them. Are you trying to say it isn’t? I didn’t fully understand your point about water and such, are you saying NOT to clean with water? Because I can assure you thats what you should be doing. Warm water and sea salt. Apart from H2ocean and saline, you shouldn’t clean a nostril or any other piercing with any thing other than those substances. Plus, your end ” …piercing equipment is sanitized OR BETTER YET, DISPOSABLE” It’s not a case of better yet disposable…needles are piercing equipment and you shouldnt be pierced with anything other than disposable! I mean, ugh. I think you should just put, sterile, autoclaved and brand new rather then better yet…just seems to put an image in my mind that autoclaved needles would be okay, which they obviously wouldnt =/ plus, septums shouldnt go through the cartilage (unless your piercer is dodgy)_ they should go through the “sweet spot” so thats my info, other than that the article was fine, yet i felt more detail could have been had on septums and other nose piercing variations, and of course, some of the things you said were a little off the mark. And I think that you should have added more on the aftercare, as if you lapse on that, then things start to go wrong. And also, nostril piercing isnt what its sometimes referred to, thats the correct name. Nose is a little vague as there are many spots on the nose that could be pierced such as nassalang, nostril, septum, nose bridge or erl, etc etc. And variations of piercings too such as the double nostril pictured above. So, yeah.
